In only their third season and led by rookie Michel Briere, they surprise the experts and clinch their first playoff berth with a 4-1 win vs. the Flyers. It wraps up second place in the Western Division and sends them onto a first-round series vs. Oakland.

Jean Pronovost scores the team's first playoff goal and Les Binkley records the first win in goal as they defeat Oakland, 2-1, for the first postseason win in franchise history.
April 12, 1970
Complete their first series win (4-0) with a 3-2 victory against Oakland in overtime of Game 4 as Briere scores the winning goal.

April 17, 1975
Vic Hadfield, Syl Apps and Lowell McDonald score third-period goals and they down the New York Islanders, 6-4, to forge a commanding 3-0 lead in the quarterfinals that leaves them needing to win just one of the remaining four games to advance. It would not happen.

Ed Westfall scores the only goal of the game for New York, and the Islanders complete a comeback from three games down to hand the Penguins one of their most memorable and bitter playoff series defeats.

John Tonelli scores the winner at 6:19 of overtime in Game 5 to give the New York Islanders a 4-3 win and ending the Penguins' hopes for a miraculous comeback from two games down in a five-game preliminary series. It would be the final postseason appearance before drafting Mario Lemieux in 1984.
April 25, 1989
Lemieux ties two NHL playoff records with five goals and eight points in a 10-7 victory against the Flyers. The Flyers win the next two games, however, and the series, 4-3.
April 13, 1991
Down, 3-2, in the Patrick Division semifinals to New Jersey, they are forced to start Frank Pieterangelo in goal in place of an injured Tom Barrasso. Spurred by a stop of a Peter Statsny shot that would become known as "The Save," Pieterangelo leads them to a 4-3 win. Two nights later, they claim a 4-0 win and the series, 4-3.

The Penguins eliminate the Boston Bruins in the Wales Conference final to earn the right to play for their first Stanley Cup.
May 15, 1991
The Penguins and the Civic Arena play host to their first Stanley Cup game. They lose to the Minnesota North Stars, 5-4, as Neal Broten scores twice.
May 25, 1991
They complete a six-game triumph over the North Stars as Mario Lemieux scores four points, Joe Mullen two goals and Tom Barrasso stops 39 shots in an 8-0 rout on the road in Game 6 to hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time.
May 9, 1992
They get the winning goal from Ron Francis in OT to beat the New York Rangers, 5-4, and even their Patrick Division final. The win sets them off on an 11-game winning streak that does not end until they hoist the Cup in Chicago 22 days later.

Following a similar path to the previous spring, the Penguins take down Boston in four games to win the Wales title and a date vs. the Chicago Blackhawks for the Stanley Cup.

The Blackhawks fall in four games and the Penguins raise the Stanley Cup for a second consecutive year. Lemieux scores a goal and adds two assists in a 6-5 win.

In one of the biggest upsets, dreams of a three-peat are crushed as David Volek beats Tom Barrasso at 5:16 of OT in Game 7 of the Patrick Division final and gives the New York Islanders a 4-3 win.

Petr Nedved scores at 2:18 a.m. after 139 minutes, 18 seconds of hockey to beat Washington, 3-2, in a game remembered as "The Pajama Game."

One win from returning to the Stanley Cup final, the Penguins lose Game 7 of the Eastern final to the Florida Panthers, 3-1, as Florida's Tom Fitzgerald breaks a 1-1 tie 6:18 into the third period by beating Tom Barrasso with a 60-foot shot from the blue line.

The Penguins and Flyers play the third-longest playoff game in NHL history -- 152 minutes, 1 second -- before Keith Primeau ends it, beating goalie Ron Tugnutt to give the Flyers at 2-1 win in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
